It’s a sad thought to not really have your heart into going to a convention that should be one of the highlights of the year…..

This is the little girl who would cause her daddy so much heart break. Sunday night we brought her into the vet because she wasn’t feeling well. She was very, very sick. Her kidneys had failed so badly the initial blood tests couldn’t read how high her scores were reading. Before Saturday night she showed zero signs of illness- the only sign was that she ate half of her dinner. The plan was to take her to the vet Monday morning first thing; what private vet is open on a weekend/emergency vets are super expensive/might just be a cold. When I got home from work Sunday night, my good friend who is a certified medical vet assist came to help me, and we both knew she wouldn’t wait. What looked like a healthy cat when I left for work was replaced by one who was sickly and had aged years beyond her time. The vet had bad news; her odds weren’t good that she’d make it through the night, and even worse that she’d survive treatment. They kept saying if she did she’d be on dialysis for the rest of her life; she hated just about everyone but me and tore her claws out anytime she went into a carrier trying to get out. She’s not with us anymore. She passed away in my arms in the emergency vet’s office at 2:30am Monday morning with my hand over her beautiful burnt amber eyes. And my little Kidd-kitten, who turned three years old this spring, took a giant piece of my heart with her to the sky.
My eyes keep playing tricks on me, I keep seeing her in the bathroom sink before I turn the light on and on the kitchen chairs from across the room if I don’t look twice to make sure she’s really not there sleeping.
After ruling out toxins we were left with a defect or possibly kidney cancer. Our only other indication that anything was wrong was that she was behaving slightly sweeter than normal for about a month. That’s it. That was her sign. Instead of being the bitch that we love so much, and miss so much, she was being sweet. And none of us thought a thing of it.
If your cats ever have a sudden shift in personality make sure to ask your vet about it, okay? Even if it’s something as simple as “IS THIS NORMAL?” just ask a vet (a vet not the internet). Because we thought she was just being sweet because some times cats are sweet. But cats have personalities all their own and when they deviate from them… that’s their sign.. and we didn’t see it. :( Always take them to the vet at the first sign of sickness. Don’t wait.
